Unearthing is an audio and visual project uniting legendary comic book writer Alan Moore, award-winning photographer Mitch Jenkins, and a cast of high calibre musicians. This unique creation consists of an epic, bewitching story written and narrated by Moore set against a mesmerizing score from Crook&Flail, Stuart Braithwaite, Zach Hill, Justin Broadrick, Mike Patton and others.

Alan Moore is best known for his groundbreaking graphic novels, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hell, V For Vendetta, and The Watchmen. These, along with work for 2000 AD and DC Comics, have established Moore as one of the most influential and important writers in the history of comics. His output has sold millions, lead to numerous awards and been adapted for feature films- Moore has even made a cameo appearance on The Simpsons.

The musical score for Unearthing is produced by Crook& Flail, a partnership between Andrew Broder and Adam Drucker. Broder is the multi-instrumentalist behind the band Fog, whilist Drucker's adventures under his Doseone solo guise- and with cLOUDEAD, Themselves and Subtle. Together the pair have listed an impressive array of talented collaborators, including Strart Braithwhite of post rockers Mogwai, drummer Zach Hill from acclaimed experimental band Hella, the trailblazing and prolific Justin Broadrick of Napalm Death, Godflesh and Jesu and alternative rock hero and Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Tomahawk/Fantomas frontman, Mike Patton.

David Bowie "Station to Station" Deluxe due out September 28th

On September 28 in the U.S. (September 20 in Europe), EMI reissues David Bowie's coke-fueled 1976 freak out Station to Station in two bonus-laden packages. The three-CD Special Edition features the album and audio from a concert at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum that took place March 23, 1976.

The decidedly more outlandish Super Deluxe Limited Edition (pictured) features those same three CDs along with LPs, DVD audio, an EP of single versions from the record, and tons of photos and paraphernalia including a replica of a Bowie fan club membership card. It's serious. Both editions feature new liner notes from music writer and director Cameron Crowe.

Live On The Sunset Strip covers three live sets, sequenced exactly as the sets unfolded, including Redding’s spoken intros. The set also includes a booklet with rare photos and liner note commentary by NPR Morning Edition‘s Ashley Kahn. “In 1966, Redding was 24 and defined not only the sound but the style and look of a true soul man. Tall and lanky, he was ready to drop to his knees and tear off the thin-lapelled jacket of his sharply pressed suit when it was time to deliver the goods," Kahn’s notes read. "His ten-piece band was his personal, traveling amen-corner, urging him to testify night after night . . . Disc One features the original stereo and mono mixes of the album stunningly remastered by Peter Mew and Tris Penna at Abbey Road Studios . This is the first time that the mono mix has been available in any format since the late '60s and is obviously the first time on CD. Disc Two features the singles, unreleased stereo mixes, the legendary unreleased single "London Bye Ta-Ta" and 5 Previously Unreleased tracks recorded for John Peel's Top Gear programme in 1967. Pitchfork just gave them a Best New Music rating, a solid 8.3. Here is part of their write up:

Brooklyn's Fang Island describe their aesthetic as "everyone high-fiving everyone." So it's appropriate that the band's website features a video of them jamming out with kindergartners and another with Andrew WK-- people so caught up in having a good time that you sometimes wonder if they're bullshitting you. What helps Fang Island steamroll past cynicism is how "fun" isn't just an ornament for them, it's embedded in the band's musical DNA.

Fang Island's self-titled second album is joyous despite its general lack of verses or choruses. It's fractured like any post-punk record while also speaking the language of classic rock, yet often feels like an intricate collage pieced together from elements that make songs memorable-- palm-muted power chords following wide-open intros, blistering solos, double-time outros. Pretty much all of that is crammed into the deleriously infectious "Daisy", an emphatic crossbreed of the Go! Team and the Promise Ring's "Is This Thing On?" The dance routine in the song's video feels like the only natural reaction to hearing it.

Acrassicauda is an Iraqi thrash metal band formed in 2001. They are often credited as being the first heavy metal group to emerge from Iraq. They became well known outside of the local Iraqi metal scene after Vice magazine did a profile of them. They received even greater coverage when they were profiled in a feature length documentary about the band and their troubles in Iraq called, Heavy Metal in Baghdad.

On Feb. 20, Damian Kulash of OK Go published an op-ed piece in the New York Times expressing annoyance at his label, Capitol/EMI, that his band’s wildly popular videos are forbidden from being embedded on sites other than YouTube. He’s not going to have that problem in the future -- the band officially announced today that it's parted ways with Capitol to go it alone on its own label.

“Major labels are facing a difficult future,” Kulash told Pop & Hiss. “The conditions we were signed under have passed, and we were likely to wind up funding ourselves anyway. I just didn’t think we were going to be able to do this so quickly. I don’t feel bilious about it. They’re not bad people at Capitol. They’re really doing us a favor.”

Kulash stressed that there was no tension between band and label over the op-ed piece. He said that OK Go had been more or less seriously planning to leave Capitol for months, and that the New York Times just happened to schedule his piece at a moment when the band had begun earnestly pursuing a dissolution of its contract. His list of difficulties with the label was more prosaic -- slashed budgets for the band’s much-beloved videos, less tour support and small, infuriating gestures such as unembeddable videos. (A representative for EMI was unable to comment yet.)

“All the people we worked with at the label wanted to see our videos embeddable. They aren’t morons,” Kulash said. “That was just a decision that made its way down the chain. Now, it’s just having one less useless cook in the kitchen.”
The band has a new album, “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky,” to promote, and OK Go's members admit that the burden of self-financing is simultaneously liberating and daunting. But they feel that the goodwill they’ve built up from their videos and constant touring will be enough to carry them forward.

“We’re one of the small percentage of bands that are actually fiscally solvent,” Kulash said. “The issue is just start-up capital; the business is already running well. A larger business like Capitol needs to aggregate its risk, and while we’re sorry not to have access to their pockets, they were only really available to the biggest acts anyways, and we’re not Coldplay.”
The band will release new material through its own new label, Paracadute, and the group's marketing savvy (the band’s embeddable clip for “This Too Shall Pass” pulled more than 6 million views in its first week online) makes it as likely a candidate as any to survive as a self-sustaining act. But Kulash also has a creeping fear that the new necessity for business savvy among young artists might distort the question of who gets to make art.

“We only want to understand the logistics of the record business as long as it keeps us afloat creatively,” Kulash said. “Whenever I read music business magazines or blogs, I get nauseous. With the op-eds, we’re usually just chugging along as band, and when something gets in the way, I’ll say, ‘This counters common sense’ and write about it. But my great fear now is that if every musician is their own business, we’ll be self-selective towards very calculating musicians. I don’t think that being a clear thinker and being a great musician are mutually exclusive, but that’s not historically the trend."

You have until June 29 to get yourself some really comfortable floor pillows. That's when the DVD version of ODDSAC, the new movie (or, if you prefer, "visual album") from Animal Collective and frequent collaborator Danny Perez, will be released.

The DVD will include some bonus content besides just the film, though we don't yet know what that bonus content will be. In the meantime, the film will screen in various cities around the U.S. during the month of March, with Perez and members of the band on hand at all screenings. Check below for the list of screenings, and for the film's freaked-out trailer.

Meanwhile, Animal Collective and Perez teamed up to take over New York's Guggenheim Museum last week. We've got a bunch of photos of the big event here. Oh, and A.C. member Panda Bear is totally playing the Pitchfork Music Festival.

Mark Linkous, avid collaborator and creator of four solo albums as Sparklehorse, committed suicide Saturday by shooting himself in the heart outside a friend’s home in Knoxville, Tenn. He was 47.

'Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas: Tropicalia Psychedelic Masterpieces 1967-1976' is the title of a newly issued compilation CD containing 16 extremely rare recordings from the heyday of early heavy Brazilian rock. Released on Tropicalia in Furs Records, the collection, compiled by Joel Stones, includes what is described in a press release as "some of the rarest and best examples of fuzzy, funky Brazilian psychedelia," all of it previously un-reissued and newly remastered.

The package also includes a 36-page full-color booklet stuffed with detailed annotation (in both English and Portuguese) and vivid images. In addition, also included is an enhanced CD, 'What are Fuzz Bananas?,' a documentary on the making of the album. A vinyl two-LP gatefold edition includes a 48-page booklet and 3-D glasses. Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street" Re-issue May 18th

Exile on Main Street will be available in two CD formats: the original 18 track release; a deluxe CD edition with the 10 special bonus tracks; and a super deluxe package that also includes vinyl, a 30-minute documentary DVD with footage from Cocksucker Blues, Ladies and Gentlemen… the Rolling Stones and Stones in Exile, and a 50-page collector’s book with photos from the Exile era. The 10 unreleased tracks were produced by Jimmy Miller, The Glimmer Twins and Don Was.

Upon its release more than three decades ago, Exile on Main Street innovatively wove varying musical genres, instruments and even artists into a compelling rhythmic masterpiece. This new compilation features 10 tracks originally recorded during the Exile era and only recently discovered while working on the reissue project. The unearthed tracks which include such titles as “Plundered My Soul,” “Dancing in the Light,” “Following the River” and “Pass The Wine” have undergone a unique evolution, while staying true to the essence of the 1972 album. Alternate versions of “Soul Survivor” and “Loving Cup” also are a part of the Exile bonus materials.

As a complement to the release of Exile on Main Street, a documentary, “Stones in Exile,” has just been completed for fans to view on US Network television and through BBC Worldwide internationally. The documentary features rare, never-before-seen archival film, photos and interviews as well as new conversations with the band and the artists they influence. Produced by Oscar -winning filmmaker John Battsek and directed by Stephen Kijak, who is known for award-winning work on Cinemania, and Scott Walker: 30 Century Man, “Stones in Exile” offers an uncommon glimpse into the lives of the band as they created one of the greatest albums of all time.

The original 18-track double-album was recorded in various stages at multiple locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richard’s mansion Nellcote in France, and in Los Angeles where the literal “Main Street” influenced the album title. These atypical circumstances surrounding the recording process greatly affected the album’s outcome which was highly reflective and influenced by the sociopolitical turbulence that marked the late `60s and early `70s. The Stones nixed the influences of a flower-child era and directed their creative process with the edgier, excessive, “more is more” approach of the `70s. Exile reveals a sprawling mix of genres with undertones of blues, country, R&B and gospel mixed with lyrics that fervently demand for release and liberation.

The album pulled together an electric array of talent including Dr. John, the late Billy Preston and pianist Nicky Hopkins. Guitarist Mick Taylor, who replaced Brian Jones in the band shortly before Jones died in 1969, is a magnificent blues player who brought an intensity and elegance to these epic tracks. At times, these musicians and others lived on the recording studio premises with the band creating an extremely open and creative collaboration for the album.

“The album’s riveting portrait of artists pushed – by the times, by themselves – to the very limits of their creativity has provided inspiration to every musical generation that has come along since Exile was released in 1972,” said author Anthony DeCurtis. “Every song on Exile on Main Street is elevated by its relationship to the music that comes before and after it. The album’s irresistible power is unlikely to diminish any time soon.”

Wu-Massacre, the collaborative album between Wu-Tang Clan members Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, and Method Man, has seen its release date pushed back a ton of times since last year, and it was starting to seem like we'd never get to hear the thing, especially with Meth facing tax-evasion charges.

But hey, looks like this thing is really coming out now! Wu-Massacre now has a firm release date, a tentative tracklist, and some ridiculously awesome comic-book-inspired cover art, as you can see above.

The album is set for a March 30 release from Def Jam. Wu guys RZA and Mathematics contribute production. Wu-Tang members Inspectah Deck and Cappadonna make appearances, as do associates like Streetlife, Solomon Childs, Trife, and Sun God. The live band Rhythm Roots Allstars plays on a few tracks, and Ghostface buddy Tracy Morgan shows up on a skit.

In June 2009, Chris Knox suffered a life-altering stroke at his home in Grey Lynn, New Zealand. This album is a celebration of Chris and his music. Minimal Wave: both a genre of underground DIY electronic music from North America and Europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. The Minimal Wave Tapes is the first official anthology (on CD, LP and digital) of Minimal Wave music from this label. Most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. They’ve been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by Minimal Wave's Veronica Vasicka and Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf.

The Minimal Wave musical genre was hallmarked by the use of the analog synths and drum machines manufactured in the 70s and 80s, and characterized by simple music structures made by musicians working in the early D.I.Y. asthetic: recording on tape in their home studios, creating their own album artwork, and often collaborating via postage mail. The fanzine CLEM (Contact List Of Electronic Musicians) was very influential in creating a worldwide community for this sort of music, before digital technology and the internet came into play.

Minimal Wave the label was founded in New York City in 2005 by Veronica Vasicka, who focused the label solely on obscure Minimal Wave recordings, remastering and releasing them on limited vinyl and digital.

The Minimal Waves Tapes fits neatly into Stones Throw Records' own tradition of compiling or reissuing the independent music of the past which influences the independent music we make today - 60s funk (The Funky 16 Corners), early 80s hip-hop (The Third Unheard) and West Coast Electro/Rap (Arabian Prince's Innovative Life) to name a few.

Record Store Day, which falls on April 17 this year, gets closer and closer every day. And now we can add Charm City float-poppers Beach House to the list of bands making new releases available exclusively at independent record stores in honor of that day.

Sub Pop has announced that the duo will release the new EP Zebra for RSD 2010.

Zebra will feature four songs, including new versions of two tracks from Beach House's BNM'ed new album Teen Dream. Maybe the most intriguing inclusion is "10 Mile Stereo (Cough Syrup Remix)". Since virtually every Beach House song already sounds like a syrup-dazed remix of itself, we can only begin to imagine how that might sound. Tracklist below.

Fucked Up - Record Store Day Exclusives

Record Store Day (April 17 this year; don't sleep) is the day that bands across the universe honor the independent retailers that helped incubate many of them, releasing exclusive limited edition goods available only at those very independent record stores.

But the singles-happy hardcore bashers in Fucked Up, a band that claims to have released "more than 35" 7" singles, are doing their peers one better. As the Daily Swarm points out, Fucked Up have announced on their blog that on Record Store Day, they will release 11 different versions of the same 7", with 10 of them dedicated to specific record stores across the U.S.

The single includes three songs from Fucked Up's Daytrotter Session-- the two tracks that were included on the Couple Tracks comp ("Magic Word" and "David Comes to Life"), as well as "Crooked Head". But the real selling point here is the cover art. Fucked Up picked 10 different record stores to honor, those record stores sent the band pictures, and now those pictures adorn 10 of the single covers. (There's also a generic cover.) You can collect all 11, but trust that it's not going to be easy.

Here are the record stores represented: Wax Trax in Denver, Waterloo in Austin, Spiral Scratch in Buffalo, Speakertree in Lynchburg, Lunchbox in Charlotte, Grimey's in Nashville, Generation in New York, Fingerprints in Long Beach, Disc Exchange in Knoxville, and CD Alley in Chapel Hill.

"Greenberg" Soundtracked Scored by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem

The new Noah Baumbach film is called Greenberg and it features a score by LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy. The soundtrack boasts 11 Murphy solo pieces and one new LCD Soundsystem song, along with tunes by Nite Jewel, Albert Hammond, Galaxie 500, the Sonics, and Duran Duran.

Talking about the soundtrack to Drowned in Sound recently, Murphy said it "sounds NOTHING like LCD, really. it's made to fit the movie, not be 'my record'." Segue: LCD Soundsystem's new album is due out later in the Spring.

Soundtrack scheduled for release on March 23. The Greenberg movie is out in select U.S. cities March 26.

Produced by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), Resevoir employs an array of instruments to create each lushly arranged track, including saws, clarinets, cellos, mandolins, ukuleles and melocias. First track "I'm a Pilot" looks ot Howard Hughes' slow demise as inspirations. Whether its its the choice of isolation we purposefully devise or the inevitable end to it all, as in the track "The Walls Are Coming Down," Fanfarlo give us no choice but to succumb to the ebbs and flows, reflections and letting go that are conveyed in each metaphor that make this album so instrumentally and intellectually rich. Though a sense of melancholy permeates Resevoire, Simon's heartfelt voice and each band member's uncompromised musicianship invites us to soar above it all and simply let go.

Girls’ debut album, Album, was just released last week, but the buzz over the group has been building for some time. It’s easy to hear why: The 44-minute Album is a marvelous mixture of sunny pop and catchy hooks, blended with occasionally heartbreaking (but always heartfelt) lyrics; it seems to demand that you roll the windows down while turning the volume up.

Founded by Christopher Owens and Chet “JR” White in San Francisco, the group has crafted 12 tracks that nod to their home state, with surfy melodies and harmonies; Owens’ emotive, often plaintive voice might bring to mind a young Elvis Costello. Most of the songs are about—surprise!—girls, and clearly, Owens was grappling with a bad breakup, as evidenced on melancholy songs like “Lauren Marie” and “Laura.” But we’re partial to the infectious single “Lust for Life,” which wishes for simple things like a suntan and “a pizza with a bottle of wine,” and points to a hopeful attempt in starting afresh: “Maybe if I really tried with all my heart/ Then I could make a brand new start in love with you.” (courtesy of veryshortlist.com)

What, you thought the Beatles onslaught would end after September 9? Not even close.

In August 1965, the Beatles played a massive concert at New York's Shea Stadium that marked one of the defining moments of their career. Well, Shea Stadium doesn't exist anymore. But in its place, we've got the brand new Citi Field. This past July, Paul McCartney, the Cute Beatle, played three shows at the Mets' new home. Soon, McCartney will release a box set live album/DVD of recordings of those shows.

Good Evening New York City is due November 17 in the U.S. from Hear Music/Concord Music Group. (In the UK, it'll be out November 23 on Mercury.) It's McCartney's second release on Hear Music, Starbucks' record label, following 2007's Memory Almost Full.

You'll be able to buy the album three ways: as a double-CD/DVD package, a deluxe two-CD/two-DVD package, or on vinyl. The bonus DVD in that deluxe package will include video of McCartney's July 15 performance at another Beatles landmark: on top of the marquee at the Ed Sullivan Theater in midtown Manhattan, including songs that didn't air when "Late Night With David Letterman" broadcast the performance.

The album includes McCartney's versions of a whole mess of classic Beatles songs, including "I'm Down", a revival from that 1965 Shea Stadium show. Other Beatles songs on the tracklist include "Drive My Car", "Got to Get You Into My Life", "The Long and Winding Road", "Blackbird", "Eleanor Rigby", "Back in the USSR", "Paperback Writer", "Let It Be", "Helter Skelter", and the obvious stadium singalong jam "Hey Jude". There will also be tributes to fallen Beatles George Harrison (a ukulele-driven version of "Something") and John Lennon (a medley of "A Day in the Life" and "Give Peace a Chance"), as well as songs from Wings ("Band on the Run", "My Love", "Let Me Roll It") and solo McCartney ("Live and Let Die", "Here Today", recent joints "Flaming Pie" and "Dance Tonight"), and a couple of tracks from the album McCartney released as the Fireman last year. The kids' music landscape is pretty bleak for the most part, filled with obnoxiously cute dinky folk music and tinkly Casio lullabies and the Wiggles. So the folks behind the Nickelodeon show "Yo Gabba Gabba!" are doing god's work when they bring deliriously technicolor art-school fantasias like this and this into our living rooms.

As a bonus, the show regularly features appearances from musicians who generally don't have anything to do with the whole rugrat circuit, including the Shins, of Montreal, the Roots, Chromeo, Mark Kozelek, Biz Markie, and I'm From Barcelona. All those folks will soon turn up on the compilation Yo Gabba Gabba! Music Is Awesome!, due October 20 from Filter. Check below for that tracklist. There will also be an iTunes deluxe edition with bonus songs.

This fall, "Yo Gabba Gabba!" will go on tour, staging some sort of show in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Hopefully someone will make a video like this out of it in 20 years or so.

Thom Yorke New 12 Inch Single Due Out Sept. 21st.

Thom Yorke formally announced his upcoming “Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses”/”The Hollow Earth” 12′’ single today on Radiohead’s Dead Air Space Website. As Rolling Stone previously reported, rumors of the single first emerged when the Canadian record plant in charge of its printing leaked word of its existence. The two songs “are loosely under the Thom Yorke name this time, although these days it’s all getting kind of blurry,” Yorke writes. The 12′’ will be released September 21st.

As Rolling Stone previous wrote and Yorke confirmed today, “Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses” is an older Radiohead track — circa 2001, Yorke writes — that was originally the parenthetical title for “Reckoner,” a song that eventually emerged in a much different form as the centerpiece of In Rainbows. This “Apart By Horses” is a “radical rework” of that original track, Yorke writes, and will also feature Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. As for the b-side, “‘The Hollow Earth’ is a bass menace that was born out of The Eraser period but needed a little more time,” Yorke says. Both tracks were produced by Radiohead’s unofficial sixth member, Nigel Godrich.

Noticeably absent from Yorke’s blurb on Dead Air Space is any mention of whether the song is his contribution to the upcoming soundtrack for the Twilight sequel New Moon, but given the timing of the release — the song will be available on conventional digital music services on October 6th, two weeks before New Moon’s release — “Apart By Horses” still seems to be the frontrunner in terms of Yorke’s contribution. The 12′’ single, which will come with a free download of the tracks, is available now as a pre-order at Radiohead’s w.a.s.t.e. store. Otherwise, Yorke writes you can pick up a copy of the vinyl at your local record store, “if you are lucky enough to have one near you.”

They are loosely under the Thom Yorke name this time, although these days its all getting kind of blurry.
FeelingPulledApartbyHorses is written & played by Jonny and I and is a radical rework of an old tune thats been kicking around without a home since 2001? i think.
The Hollow Earth is a bass menace that was born out of the Eraser period but needed a little more time.
Both were produced by Nigel Godrich as ever. And mastered by Bob Ludwig.
They are being put out on 12” with sliced sleeve by Stanley and Tchock.
My sources tell me this will be available from the 21st of September if you’re interested.. On sale in the w.a.s.t.e part of our website (with a gratis download.)
Or you can go buy it in a good record shop if you are lucky enough to have one near you.
Then later on there will be like a normal download thing i think around the 6th of Oct through the usual channels.

Beatles Box Sets in HIGH Demand but LOW Availability.

Next Wednesday, 09/09/09, is Beatles Day, as The Beatles: Rock Band and the Beatles Remastered CDs are released all over the world. However, it seems many Beatles fans who were looking forward to hearing those Beatles remasters will be disappointed on Beatles Day.

We can now report that as of last night, the official US Beatles store at beatles.com now shows, next to its listings for the box sets, that pre-ordered box sets will be shipped late, not on the originally promised date of 09/09/09.

The site now says that pre-orders for the Beatles Stereo Box set will ship at "the end of September," and the listing for the Beatles Mono Box even later, listed as shipping the "first week of October."

A Beatles News reader tells us that they checked the status of their order on the beatles.com store for the Mono Box last night, and the site shows no info on the order, and further, he says that his bank account, which had been previously charged for the order, now shows the charge for the order, $315 with shipping, as being credited back to his account. He is now concerned that the status of his order has changed, but can't get any further info about it from the site.

Our Beatles News tipster also reports that he was told by a local record store owner in the Dallas, Texas area, that their allotment of stereo box sets has been reduced to just 3 copies by EMI. He says the store owner was told by the label that there may indeed be a shortage of Stereo Box sets on 09/09/09, and that many major retailers will have neither the Stereo or the Mono Box sets in their stores on Beatles Day.

It is not known whether this later shipping date being stated on the beatles.com US store site applies to all pre-orders made from the site, or only those pre-orders made after the stated date change. We are trying to follow up with the company that runs the store on beatles.com, but we haven't gotten any feedback on this from them yet.

The A-side of this Vinyl Saturday 7” is “Slight Figure of Speech” which is on the album, but the B-side, “More of You” is NOT, and is available on this cool 7”

BIG STAR a special 7” just for indie record stores. Why is this so special? Well…
"Feel" (alternate mix) is a selection from the forthcoming Keep An Eye On The Sky box set (coming 9/15). Best known as the opening track of Big Star's #1 Record, this previously unissued early mix of the song has additional guitar and some different lyrics not heard in the final mix you've known for all these years. It also lacks the brass overdubs and some other production touches, but is a far more rough and ready presentation of this Chris Bell classic.

After the release of Big Star's Radio City album in 1974, a well known British producer (who shall remain nameless) from the 1960's approached Ardent about remixing "Mod Lang" for single release. The original tapes were flown to New York City's famed Record Plant and augmented with piano and additional percussion (did I hear you say "more cowbell"?). Although the band passed on the results, we thought you might like to hear this "B Side" rarity which has been sitting in the can since 1974! This track is exclusive to this vinyl release.

Nirvana "Bleach" Deluxe Re-issue Due Out Nov. 3rd

Bleach turns 20 this year (feel old yet?), and Sub Pop is planning a deluxe reissue on CD and 180 gram white vinyl. (The first run of Bleach was also on white vinyl, appropriately enough.) The 20th anniversary edition is due November 3. Jack Endino, the album's original producer, oversaw the remastering, which was done from the original tapes.

This edition will also include a complete recording of a never-before-released 1990 live show at Portland's Pine Street Theatre, remixed by Endino from original tapes. And there's a booklet: 48 pages on CD and 16 on LP, featuring previously unseen photos. (courtesy of Pitchfork)

Beatles Reissue Everything

Just when Beatles fans thought they had everything they could possibly own by the band, along comes EMI and Apple Corps with yet another reason to repurchase the Fab Four’s spectacular music catalog, including not one, but two box sets.

This time the carrot dangling in front of fans is the phrase “digitally remastered,” as in the first time the original Beatles catalog has been digitally remastered.

September 9 is the release date, which coincidentally is the same day “The Beatles: Rock Band” video game will be released.

Aside from remastering the catalog, EMI and Apple Corps are including several value-added features to sweeten the pot for fans wondering if they need more versions of the songs they’ve already been listening to over the years.

For starters, each of the CDs is packaged with replicated original United Kingdom cover art. Included are expanded booklets containing original and new liner notes and rare photos. Furthermore, for a limited time only, each CD will include a short documentary about the album.

All 12 Beatles albums are in the digitally remastered collection, including track listings and artwork as originally released in the U.K. The set also includes Magical Mystery Tour, which was originally released in the U.K. as the soundtrack to the TV film of the same name, and wasn’t fleshed out to album size until it was released in the States. Plus, the group’s Past Masters Vol. I and II are being combined into one title, resulting in 14 titles in all – the original 12 albums, Magical Mystery Tour and Past Masters. The collecton will also be available as a box set.

EMI and Apple Corps have been working on the project for the past four years, utilizing state-of-the-art technology along with old recording equipment from the ‘60s. The claim is that the digitally remastered albums represent the highest fidelity any Beatles songs have enjoyed since the original releases.

Each CD booklet contains historical and recording notes. With the exception of the Past Masters release, the CDs will also contain mini-documentaries on the making of each album and will include archival footage, rare photos and never-before-heard studio chat.

The second box set – The Beatles In Mono – pretty much functions as the name implies and contains all of the Beatles recordings that were mixed for mono release, resulting in mono versions of 10 albums. Included are two additional mono master discs containing material similar to the stereo tracks on Past Masters.

But if that’s not enough to grab your attention (and your wallet), the mono versions of Help and Rubber Soul also include the original 1965 stereo mixes never released before on CD, and will be packaged in min-vinyl CD replicas, including original inserts and label designs.

Although the reissues are all about the music, Apple Corps and EMI have done an excellent job providing additional, value-added content. One of the often-expressed criticisms of online music is that, other than legal threats, the labels have failed to give music fans reasons to legitimately purchase music that they can already get for free.

By beefing up the reissues with plenty of photos, films and artwork, both companies have given fans that already have the songs reasons to purchase the newly remastered CDs. That’s something the rest of the recording industry should consider when trying to convince consumers it’s better to buy than to steal. (courtesy of pollstar.com)

New album, "Nothing Gold Can Stay" out now! Here is a review of the album from the L.A. Times:

This new indie-roots duo takes its name from "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," its album title from a Robert Frost poem, and its sound from early-'70s folkies such as Cat Stevens and Neil Young. As you might expect, there isn't much about "Nothing Gold Can Stay," the Duke & the King's debut, that suggests it was made during this century.

The Duke is Simone Felice, who until recently played drums in the Felice Brothers, a rollicking family band from upstate New York that released a terrific record earlier this year called "Yonder Is the Clock." The King is Robert "Chicken" Burke, an old multi-instrumentalist pal of Felice's who has worked with George Clinton and Sweet Honey in the Rock.

The pair recorded the 10 songs here in a cabin-turned-studio near Woodstock, and if their stay there involved lots of quiet evenings spent sipping stiff Irish coffees, then "Nothing Gold Can Stay" reflects it beautifully: This is hushed, deliberately paced acoustic music perfect for sitting around a fireplace pondering the coming thaw. "All our days are just so many waves in the wind," Felice observes in "If You Ever Get Famous," a supremely lovely line that hints at his other life as a novelist.

"Just in case you were wondering, there is music that I'm really in love with right now. But there's only one record that I listen to every single day, and that's Lightning Dust's upcoming Infinite Light.

The first song, "Antonia Jane," gives me chills each time I hear it. I think it's the line, "I declare a war on you." But mostly, it's the overall interplay of the band's guitar, piano and vocals; together, they create a musical conversation that vacillates between melancholy and joy, grime and glimmer. And the drums sound like far-off foot soldiers, coming up close and then receding into the background. Lightning Dust makes really electrifying music -- not shocking or bombastic, but in a way that puts the listener near the power source, close enough to feel the buzz, tingle and vibration that accompany beauty."
